The Essentials
Map of area - get to know the area before you get there!
Compass - practice using it before you get there.
First Aid Kit - You can buy kits in your local mountaineering shop.
Pocket Knife - One of those with all the goodies.
Extra Food (energy bars)
Matches and Lighter - (both in a waterproof container)
Fire starter (careful!)
Flashlight and Headlamp (with extra batteries and bulb)
Sunglasses - function not fashion
Extra Clothes (wind and rain proof shell and extra layers / fleece or
wool is good)
Water filter or iodine tablets
Identification
Space blanket
Candle
Whistle
Duct tape
Sunscreen
